On Saturday, July 28th, I completed the Silks and Satins 5k in Saratoga Springs, NY. The weather was warm and humid, at least for 8 am, with temperatures in the low 70's. Thunderstorms rumbled through the course shortly after the race was over.
I have a few beefs with the Organizers of the Silks and Satins 5k for 2007:
- The fees: $20 advance, $25 day of race, are on the high side.
- The timing: No On Course Timing, unless you count the nice lady with the watch at "mile 1."
- The course markers: No On Course Distance Markers, unless you count the half dozen people saying "only half a mile to go" every minute.
- The water on course: One water station is better than no water station (as at the start).
- The start: or should I say the False Start.
- The lineup: The slow runners were asked to line up 1/4 mile away from the start. People, I signed up for a 5k, not a 5.4k.
The good points:
- Great turnout.
- Very supportive crowd.
- The registration process was smooth.
- Electronic timing at the finish.
- Excellent T-shirt, even for the day of race registrants.
- Excellent post-race grub, thanks to Price Chopper and Starbucks.
- Easy, flat course winding through the streets of Saratoga Springs' East Side.
Overall, I will consider entering this event again, as the festive atmosphere and crowds offset the annoyances.
