The first week at Saratoga Racetrack comes to a close with another graded stakes; today it's the Grade 2 Amsterdam for the 3 year-old sprinters. Expect a fast race as the top dashers of this generation compete among themselves for one of the last times before being set out against older horses. Desert Key looks to be the fastest of these, but with a good deal of pace in the race, don't be surprised to see a closer such as Kodiak Kowboy or Devereux getting up for a piece of the pie.
Paulie's Picks for Saratoga, Monday July 28
Best Bet: Kodiak Kowboy (Race 9, Number 3).

Del Mar race track goes into racing Sunday with a Pick-6 Carryover of $1,561,987. Expect the final pot to exceed $3 Million. Paulie's Picks for Del Mar is a great place to start your handicapping for this very exciting opportunity at a big purse.
Small better? Don't waste your money picking favorites. Find a few to take a stand against if you want to be in line for a big payout. You can't afford to spread out with the favorites, and all the other cash-poor players will pile on the favorites, too. Look at horses like Schaghticoke Hill in the 9th, Barbecue Eddie in the 8th, and Smooth and Savvy and Top Emblem in the 7th to put some juice in your tickets.
This is a wide-open card, so take a stab at a big payout.

HiBigBoy, a Harlequin Farm-bred, makes his debut at Belmont Park on Wednesday, July 2, in the 5th race. He is number 2 in the field of 8 maiden NY Breds. Morning line odds are not out (as of Sunday evening), but he's sure not to be the favorite with Blazing Buddha and Tough Jake coming in off of well contested placings last out. Paulie's Picks has him 4th of 8, and first among the firsters.
Off his scintillating work Saturday (48.14, 5/44, from the gate), it's a very positive sign that he's been wheeled back to start 4 days later. Another positive sign is that the trainer's son-in-law, 2-time Eclipse award winner, and bobble-head model, John Velazquez, has taken the mount. HiBigBoy's trainer, Leo O'Brien, has trained top horses in the past, including champion Yank's Music, Irish 2000 Guineas winner Fourstars Allstar, and perennial Saratoga favorite Fourstardave.
Leo is not known as trainer of first time winners, but the one I couldtrack down had similarly strong works before heading to the track.
Post time is approximately 3:06 PM EDT.
Update: 6th. However, he had a fine move in the middle to close a 20.5 length deficit to an 11 length deficit before being passed for 6th.
Paulie's Picks had a $37.20 day, with the $21.00 winner of the 7th, $10.60 in the 6th, and $5.60 in the 2nd.

Toot Toot! That's Paulie's horn and we're proud to toot it after a fantastic day with Paulie's Picks. The obvious first: Big Brown the clear favorite picked for the Preakness, but what Macho Again as Paulie's 3rd pick? Did you put that together in your exacta? We did ;-)
But, as often has been the case, look at the results on the entire card: 13 races, 7 top choices won. OK, so there was a lot of chalk. But at least it was clear that the chalk was deserved.
Now, on to Belmont! It won't be the same race, with Casino Drive shipping in for the family three-peat. But Big Brown didn't actually race, what you saw was more of a public work out. There'll be plenty of horse to hit the track, and at least he'll have to prove himself to get the big triple crown cheese.
